What's In a Name?

Over the past few weeks, I have had the privilege to meet and photography nearly 70 dogs at a Farmer's Market. It is an absolute blast meeting all of the owners and seeing how much they love their pets.

Naming a pet can be challenging. You want to capture their personality, their looks, have a connection in possibly obscure ways, and yet not sound inappropriate in the vet’s office!

When we adopted Kenzy, we pondered for quite a while. She was a 10-week-old wiggly puppy. After some thought, we chose to name her Kenzy – based on the McKenzie River in Oregon. That river is beautiful! (And, so is Kenzy).

Fast forward 10 months. We went to an adoption event at a pet store. We had Kenzy with us and we were hoping to find a compatible sibling. We met and petted a number of very adoptable dogs, but we were drawn to this black border collie cross, gnawing intently on her rawhide that they had given her. She was the one!

Her name on the adoption papers was Addy. It really didn’t strike Mark or me. So, on our way home, Mark announced, “She is Abby!” I said, “ok, why that name?” He answered, “You know there is a female character on NCIS LA named Kenzi, why not name her after the female character in the original NCIS? Abby!”

So, Mark made a connection, and yes, it was a little obscure, but it works! Abby fits her perfectly.

Now, the dogs above have names that stood out to me. Their names are: Huckleberry, Killer, Bear, and Chewie. See if you can assign the right name to the right dog!
